Simpsons Malt Steps Up Production and Sustainability
Case Study
Simpsons Malt has ramped up its production in a big way with the addition of a brand-new Germination & Kilning Vessel (GKV) — the tenth at its Tweed Valley Maltings site. This latest upgrade adds up to 15,000 extra tonnes of malt per year, bringing the site’s total capacity to a huge 260,000 tonnes annually. Most of that goes straight to the booming distilling industry.
Going Greener
But it’s not just about producing more — it’s about doing it more sustainably.
The new GKV is powered by Simpsons’ on-site Energy Centre, which uses a combination of biomass boilers and a wind-powered electric boiler. Since kilning is one of the most energy-intensive parts of the malting process, switching to clean energy has made a big difference:
- 90% lower carbon emissions from kilning
- Up to 80% reduction in emissions at the Tweed Valley site
- 55% lower emissions company-wide
That’s a big win for the planet — and for the future of malt.
Lighting That Matches the Vision
To support the site’s clean energy transition and tough industrial needs, Simpsons Malt has selected the Sammode JOU133 lighting fitting.
- Durable & Industrial-Grade: Perfect for the humid, high-temperature conditions of the kilning environment
- Energy Efficient LED: Complements the site’s low-carbon goals
- Low Maintenance: Built to last, reducing waste and downtime
- Circular by Design: Repairable and made for long-term use—just like Simpsons’ approach to sustainable investment
For the GKV rooms the JOU133 provides reliable, efficient lighting that stands up to the elements while helping cut energy use even further.
Bringing It All Together
With smart investments in clean energy, efficient equipment, and sustainable infrastructure, Simpsons Malt isn’t just growing capacity — it’s setting a new benchmark for greener food and drink supply chains.
