Scottish Seafarms Harvest Room
Case Study
Scottish Sea Farms sought a new lighting system for its harvesting area where live fish, transferred from well-boat via the swim-ashore method, are swiftly and humanely killed.
With 15,000 to 25,000 salmon being harvested every day, 6 days a week, the challenge was finding the right lighting solution for this demanding working environment.
Previous approaches struggled to cope with the high-pressure jets used to clean the facility, the potential for water ingress, and the cold and humid conditions, with the result that lighting was replaced regularly.
When assessing alternatives that could overcome each of these factors, and meet the facility’s stringent health and safety requirements, Ecolighting Systems recommended the Pascal Fitting by Sammode.
With a rating of up to IP6, the Pascal comes in a tubular design with stainless-steel endcaps, significantly reducing the points of water ingress compared to the more traditional linear light fittings and ensuring that no pools of water can gather on the fitting.
Its 3-seal system withstands high pressure washing, while its external stainless-steel components allow for the use of detergents without the fear of corrosion or damage to the light fitting.
As for the additional benefits of the Pascal Fitting, mounting straps allow for 360-degree rotation, offering the option to direct light where required.
Fitted to the facility’s ceiling on a chain system, these luminaries can also be lowered for easier cleaning and maintenance, removing the need to climb ladders or other platforms and improving colleague safety.
Scottish Sea Farms Processing Engineer Richard Dobson said: ‘We’ve had the lights installed for nearly 12 months now, without any issues. They provide a good level of lighting and, compared with any previous fittings used, are easy to clean due to the round surface of the fitting.’
