Exterior & Billboard Lighting at Bruichladdich Distillery – Islay, Scotland

Case Study

Bruichladdich Distillery, established in 1881 on the iconic Isle of Islay, is known for its bold approach to whisky and gin production. With globally recognized brands like Port Charlotte and The Botanist Gin, Bruichladdich blends tradition with innovation and has a strong visual identity deeply rooted in the local landscape.

Project Background

Following a successful partnership supplying ATEX-rated lighting for the distillery’s warehouse facilities, Scott Lindsay of Bruichladdich approached Ecolighting Systems with a new challenge:
To illuminate the distillery’s exterior structures and a large branded billboard in a way that enhances their character while harmonizing with the surrounding village environment.

Project Requirements

  • Highlight iconic architecture and brand signage

  • Blend seamlessly with the existing SON (Sodium) street lighting, which emits a warm amber glow

  • Use low-impact, removable filters to future-proof the installation for a potential shift to LED-based street lighting

  • Ensure energy efficiency and aesthetic appeal

Solution Delivered

Lighting Design Approach

  • Warm light filters were used to match the current SON streetlight ambiance, maintaining visual consistency throughout the village.

  • Filters were made removable, allowing for adaptability if municipal lighting is upgraded to cooler, white LED sources in the future.

  • Subtle but effective placement ensured that lighting enhanced architectural features without overwhelming the structure or disturbing the village’s nightscape.

Collaboration

The project was successfully completed with support from:
